For Release- November 24, 1999
Rockford, IL- "Eminent domain is legal in
Illinois only with just cause and with compensation by
jury," said Rockford Area Libertarians Chairman John Huwe
on Wednesday. "According to Article I Section 15 of the
State Constitution. To relocate businesses in order to
permit building a similar business is not just cause, and
I'd love to be on that jury."
"While I am no fan of eminent domain in any case," Huwe
continued, "it is particularly odious to claim three
square blocks of land, when the stated purpose, an IGA
grocery store, would fit, with parking, in one square
block."
"I consider capitalism to be the unfettered private
ownership of property and business, and fascism to be
when government meddles in the operating of businesses,"
Huwe concluded. "Evidently, Mayor Box prefers the latter.
He wants to use force to impose his governmental will on
business. If he is basing his re-election plans and
political legacy on fascist policies, he is taking the
right first step."
