Rockford, IL- The Rockford Area Libertarians
noted with appreciation the Rockford Register Star's new
policy of complete coverage of write-in
candidates.
Rockford Area Libertarians Chairman John Huwe noted Sunday, "the paper is now endorsing write-in candidates for elected positions. We didn't endorse either candidate, but the open-mindedness is an improvement over past policy."
"When I ran in 1996 as a write-in candidate for State Assembly, I was ignored. When I sent in my answers to questions posed to the two balloted candidates, the answers weren't printed. I hope that in 2000. whether we make the ballot or not, our candidates will recieve similar treatment to that of candidates Frank Moyer and Karol Hammond."
"One of the problems for third parties is a lack of open coverage. As evidenced in Minnesota last year, when the two dominant parties receive a challenge that the media is willing to discuss, miracles happen."
Huwe concludes, "I look forward to the Register Star's coverage of all candidates in 2000, regardless of party affiliation... or whether they are on the ballot."
